Plein Air!

I have just completed a semester of outdoor location painting.  Here is the most successful crew of the bunch.  I have to say, this class was very challenging.  Although I am well versed in oil painting, it was a completely different monster to take on.  Every moment outside is different from the last, and color relationships determine so much of the successfulness of the painting.  It took a long time for me to resist just painting what I see.  But I think I'm on to something here.

Here is a sketch from a story that I have been developing for at 2 minute short which I will be presenting to Nickelodeon.  This adorable little ginger is Zachary, inspired by my boyfriend and an experience that my cousin had as a little boy.  The actual story is top secret right now.  More to come!

Mary Blair

Today something interesting happened.  Well, it began yesterday.  I had a project due this morning, and I cannot begin to describe how frustrating it was to finish it last night.  It was my Alice piece, the one shown just a couple posts down from this one.  I had my sketch, all perfect, ready to go, and all of a sudden, I hit a wall.  No, not a wall, more like a boulder the size of Australia.  Unfortunately, I had to turn the piece in, unfinished, and very unsatisfied.  But through the confusion and frustration, came a great understanding of what I must do to make this piece really great.  Also, came the largest respect and love for the legendary artist, Mary Blair.  So there you go.  There is always a silver lining.  Even when you have to turn in a very embarrassing work of art, if you can even call it that.  I will now attempt to make Mary Blair proud.  Here I go!

Here's my next venture down the rabbit hole.  It's still very rough and more happy flowers will be added to the bunch, but very excited to see if I can get a contract with my fine art!

The Grimm's Tale "The Seven Ravens"

After hours of grueling work, I am proud to present four visual development environments for my adaptation of "The Seven Ravens".  The assignment included mastering a new style.  Typically, I am very detailed and attempt a sense of realism with my art, so I chose to let the art of Samantha Kallis inspire me.  Her graphic and storybook style is something I have always wanted to attempt, so here it is!  My version takes place in the pre French Revolution era, where seven brother ravens, get turned into humans by a baker who is secretly a wizard.  After living the spoiled life, stealing food from the town beneath them, particularly enjoying taking from the local baker, the brothers get what's coming to them.  After being turned into humans, they must live as homeless and deemed crazy, for who would believe their story?  Several years pass, and their baby sister, who is now old enough to steal her own food from the town, discovers who these boys are to her.  In a desperate plea with the baker, he agrees to release the boys from their curse.  They are reunited with their family and never steal from that bakery, so long as they live.
Here, we have the opening setting to the story, with the raven's home overlooking the town they take advantage of.
This represents the town setting, with our eye being lead straight to the bakery.

This is the basement of the bakery, where the closet wizard can practice his craft and bake his bread.  The raven brothers steal by coming in through the broken window which barely sees the light of day.

This is the alley in which the brothers must call home once they are turned into humans.
